bz Jun 29, 2004 12:15 PM

I am interested in getting some to build a bd cage. How much does it cost and where can you find it? Thanks in advance.

Any lumber store should have it.

Well here in NC its around $30 for 4ft X 8ft sheet which is basically same as a good grade sheeting plywood if not cheaper. With way less finishing costs

I am hoping to build a stackable set of cages. If I built them using this material, would it be strong enough? I want to make sure whatever I use is so strong I won't worry about one colapsing into the other.

Hey Amanda, the stuff is VERY strong, and weighs a ton. I use it for my big boids but think that it's overkill for beardies. A lightweight alternative that I've been playing with lately (and like it so far) is I build a 1x2 skeleton framework (or 2x2 if it's a larger cage) and then atatch waterproof paneling (like for shower walls about 1/8" thick) to it. Lightweight but still sturdy enough for a beardie.

Interesting! The lighter the better, obviously. We are even thinking of attaching wheels to the bottom to make it easier to move around. I want to to be a piece of furniture in the room ya know?

When you talk about the shower panelling, is that like the see though stuff? Kinda like glass, but made of a type of plastic, so you can drill holes into it if you need to?

No, it isn't the door stuff. It's just like wall panneling except it's waterproof so it can go on the wall around a shower. It's not for a 'furniture grade' cage though, we use it because it's cheap and light. My wife's kinda small so she has trouble with the heavier cages and she can move these no problem. It's what we use for the majority of our animals in our breeding rooms but it does have more of a clean industrial look to it. For nice display (furniture grade) cages I really like the oak or walnut laminated plywoods. It's a fraction of the cost of the real thing and looks very nice with a couple coats of stain on it. Check with a guy over in the cages section, I think his name is chris, he has done tons of cages and always has some good advice to give.
