incubating racer eggs

Lucio Jun 29, 2004 01:46 PM

I have a number of clutches of blue racer (Coluber constrictor) eggs I am incubating. I have had trouble with some sort of fungus attacking and killing the eggs in the past. What can I do to prevent this from happening?
I use an incubator set at 30 degrees Celsius. The eggs are placed individually into damp vermiculite substrate with a 2:1 ratio of vermiculite and water by weight. I have had success raising other species with these conditions but have lost quite a few racer eggs. Is there something I am doing wrong, or was it some freak occurance? Any help would be appreciated!

Most likely they were not fertile to begin with. I would incubate them at 82-84F, and use a 1:1 water/vermiculite ratio. Fungus will very rarely effect the health of a fertile egg, but it can happen, alhough I have never seen it.
