My traumatized "new" beardie won't eat

redhed Jun 29, 2004 02:48 PM

A week ago I got a "new" male who is between 1 and 2 years old (closer to 2). I had been considering getting one, but decided to buy him when I saw him in the store caged with 2 females he was ignoring, and found out he had been sold and returned several months later, b/ the stupid kid didn't want him any more (actually, the parents are the ones to be blamed, in this case, but what can you do.)

He's in good health, and quite pretty (red and orange), although a bit on the thin side, and not surprisingly he won't eat, except for maybe a couple crickets a day. I've been trying all sorts of my female's favorites to entice him, I even put a rasberry IN his mouth when he was displaying with mouth open ( he did eat the whole thing)...but he's not interested on his own.

I've put them together for part of the time, and kept them separate, too, so he can get used to his new surroundings yet again, without always having to be concerned with his testosterone-inducing behavior around my female...I've also had him in real sunlight, so he can at least get the benefits of that. He is pretty active, doing the normal things a male does around my female, but he's not too aggressive, which is good - he head bobs, she responds, and arm waves, they aren't biting. (I'd like them to breed, but if they don't I won't care.)

He hasn't pooped since I got him a week ago, and this worries me most.

What can I do, after how many days should I really be concerned?

thanks

R

I'd put him in one place... in his own cage for a quarantine period. Moving him around from the females cage, to outdoors, and back, etc.. is probably prolonging the acclimation period. It's normal for them to refuse food for the first few days of being moved into a new cage. If you keep moving him, he'll probably keep refusing food.

You might want to try pinkies/fuzzies, or worms (superworms, silkworms)... None of my reptiles would refuse a few silkworms.
