Some important questions.......

GECKOFREAK Jun 29, 2004 03:27 PM

I am a teenager who currently kepps a Crested Gecko, but the idea of keeping Poison Dart Frogs in a highly naturalistic setting (in other words a "show cage" really appeals to me. I know that building such a cage would require a lot of time, something I can do , but I was wondering how much all of you that have show cages paid for such a project. I also know that all pets require some level of commitment, some are more high-maitinance than others and I wanted to know how much of your time and attention your PDF's require (for example can you go on vacation with your PDF's at home) If you could answer my questions that would be great, because I'm just trying to find out if these animals are for me! Thanks!
Travis

The cost of a vivarium is a factor of its size and the materials you use to build it. I have a couple grand invested in my 135 gallon viv. But I went pretty much all out with it. On the other hand my smaller tanks have less then 100$ in them and look very nice.

As for the time investment, it does require a comitment of a few minutes a day. It takes me about 15 minutes a day to feed and water my 3 tanks. And then once a week I make two fruitfly cultures. When it comes to vaccations all of my frogs are 'over tanked' (much more tank space then they need) so not feeding for three or four days is not a problem. But for longer vacations many people just put a fruitfly culture in the tank and leave the frogs for a week or so.

Just read everything you can on these neat little guys, before you get started. You will find there is a lot of info out there.
