both parents are albino why isn't the baby

indus Jun 29, 2004 06:32 PM

This is a Leopard Gecko Question.

I just had a baby hatch and it does not look like an albino (amelanistic) it does have black pigmentation.

The mother is a Tremper "Chocolate Jungle Albino" (I think the mothers father was a normal jungle"
the Father is a Tremper "Yellow phase Giant Albino"

Why isn't the baby an albino I thought breeding albino to albino will produce only albinos.

What will this baby be het. for

mother - Jungle and Albino
Father - Giant and Albino

will that baby be het for Jungle, Giant and Albino???

Do I have any change of getting albino offspring out of these parents or will they all look normal???

the only explanation is that the Albinos are not compatible. This is a fairly common occurrence w/ mutations. There are Albino Boas, Albino Western Diamondbacks, Axanthic Ball Pythons, Anerythristic Corn snakes, and prob. many other mutations that are similar in appearance but not compatible w/ ea. other. I do recall hearing of two different strains odd Albino Leopard Geckos but do not remember if they are not compatible. You prob. will get a better response on the Leo forum (if you already haven't). The animals you produced are Dbl. Het. for both strains of Albino. When you breed them together, you will get Albinos from both lines & poss. an animal homozygous for both strains.

Thanks for the info.

I know that breeding albino to albino was what you intended and that you wanted albino offspring, but the best way to get HEALTHY albinos is to cross albino with normal. It's too late to explain now...but a vet showed me how it worked...and it's really better to go albinoxnorm than albinoxalbino

Thanks for the tip, I am starting to think that the baby might actually be an albino but just a dark colored one, the mom is a Chocholate Albino and the Dad is a yellow phase albino, I think the baby is either a Chocholate Albino or a Normal I'm still not sure, but both babies are incredibly healthy bright eyed alert and total pigs, they are very strong and beautiful babies. The last group I had I bought as a breeding group (hypo pastels) and the babies I got from them had some problems like odd shaped eyes and taking a while to start eating, slower growing etc., I guess there must have been a reason for them being sold. This years babies are so much healthier than the babies from my pastel group last year. well thanks for the tip. Debi

From my understanding of Leo. genetics you should have an albino that is both het for giant and jungle. I don't know if you are familiar with the relatively knew info that temp. affects coloration and melinin content but appearantly if you incubate at alow temp. melinin will be deposited in the skin at a higher rate. The info. states that sex is determined in the first two weeks of incubation and after taht the temp. should be maintained at 87-90(I think)degrees, basically male temps. to slow the amount of melinin being deposited. This temp. shouldn't flustuate from my understanding and should continue at at least 90 degrees after hatching to maintain the bright colors. The leopard gecko manual available at most Petco's goes over all this. i have an albino that almost looks normal, her pattern is darker than my others and yet she still has red eyes.
