Weird ig behavior

riiotgrrl Jun 29, 2004 08:05 PM

My ig has been weird lately. She hasnt been pooping as, um, large as she usually does and she has been paceing for the past two days or so. I have been giving her mineral oil evert few days (not much...just a bit on her food) to help her poo (i thought she had a hair ball) but now i am thinking that she may be getting ready to lay eggs? She is about 3 and 1/2 years old or so (a rescue that i inherited from a rescue org that was full up)...she cant ever be caged because she becomes neurotic. ANYWHO...i have been a bit concerned as of late, but i am thinking that she is about to lay. I think that she is old enough (definately big enough).. what do you guys think. She is acting fine other than the paceing....she was a little sleepier than usual today, but now that she is up she is running all over the house (not normal). Ugh i dont know what is going on..

I dont have a female, however that does sound like (what ive read) egg-laying behavior. Checking her calcium level and adjusting as needed is one thing you can do to prepare

A vet check is indeed nec. to see if she is indeed carrying eggs. The vet will instruct you on how to suppliment ca. if it is even needed! He will prolly do an x-ray to see how many eggs she is holding. a "dig" box is needed here so she can lay. "iguanas for dummies" has a GREAT section on laying boxes on how to construct them and how to fill them with what types of soil

I'm not so sure it has to do with impending egg laying. How has she been eating? Gravid igs typically eat less or stop eating altogether before egg laying. Also, running all around the house (not normal) doesn't sound to me like an iguana that's about to drop eggs, unless she's doing a lot of scraping or clawing. That's a sign she's looking for a nesting place. In any case, a trip to the vet may be well worth it. The vet should easily be able to tell without x-rays whether she's carrying eggs or not.

Sounds like being gravid to me...has her eating dropped off as well? that is usually what happens...has she been for a vet check lately? an xray will confirm her condition for you...she will need a litter box of soil/sand mixture to dig in for laying...there is a great article here http://www.greenigsociety.org/breedingseason.htm

good luck...Lyn

My female began pacing weeks before she laid eggs, but it is never too early to be prepared. I didn't recognize the signs soon enough and ended up spending hundreds in veterinary bills after she became egg bound. If they have to "hold on" to the eggs for any extra time it causes all kinds of problems. I'd recommend taking her to a vet now regardless. They can check her calcium level in her blood and give her a calcium injection if necessary so she'll be less likely to become egg bound.
