Our Second Litter of the Season!

wetceal Jun 29, 2004 08:42 PM

Well, our second litter of the season is here! Our girl gave birth last night on her 110th day after her POS. She had 15 babies and one slug. Of the 15 babies, there were 8 hypos and 7 normals.

Unfortunately, 2 of the normal babies were dead when we found the litter this morning. We think that those two babies got accidently crushed or something by the female because they were both out of their sacks and appeared otherwise healthy...just dead. So that's unfortunate and sad but we do have 13 healthy little babies!

We missed the birthing so I don't have any birthing photos but I did take some photos of a few of the hypo babies. They are somewhat odd looking. Three out of the eight hypos are more extreme looking than the rest. They have a reduced number of saddles and the saddles themselves are very thin. They also have some weird coloration. Not sure how to describe it or what it it.

I'm not sure if they'll just shed the odd coloring out or what but I thought they were pretty cool looking so I snapped some photos. They all have an area right where the base of the head meets the neck that is very pink. It was hard to show how extreme the odd coloration is because the babies are still all shiny. If they don't shed this out, I'll be sure to take some post shed photos!

Let me know what you think!

Thanks,
Celia

This one is more extreme looking...

And this one too...

Congrats. A 2fer year!

I would certainly like to see pics after they have shed a couple times as they do change quite a bit from when they were born. They look like they have a lot of color on their sides too.

Celia,
. Congratulations. I think that those two dead babies may have been caused by breakage of the membrane while the mother was laboring. The membrane around a baby Boa provides oxygen via osmosis. During labor if the membrane breaks the baby loses it's oxygen supply and will suffocate if not delivered fairly quickly. I have more of these dead babies delivered by my Rainbow Boas when there are slugs in the litter and the mother struggles longer to deliver the slugs. The dead babies are usually delivered out of the membrane.

It means a lot to me that all my boa friends here on the forum appreciate these little ones as much as I do! Thank you very much for all your kind words and congratulations. That's why I love this forum and all the users on it!

As for the two babies that died...I don't know what happened although the theory about the sacks breaking sounds very plausible. I think one of the babies was crushed for sure because it was all the way on the other side of the cage when we found it between the layers of newspaper. It just seemed like that unfortunate little one crawled between the newspaper and the mom didn't see him/her and crawled or sat on him. Anyways, whatever may have happened, I just hope it doesn't happen again...

Thanks,
Celia
