getting a pet rat from a feeder breeder wouldn't be a good ideal at all. Most (especially in large feeder breeders) don't take much time, if any to socialize their rats, so they are not people friendly. Most feeders are your typical white lab rat. Also, there can be a fair bit of inbreeding and thus, less robust lines in a feeder colony as the breeder isn't trying to get a rat that lives long and has a good temperment etc, but something to feed to his reptiles. Probably the only thing feeder breeders look for genetically is size of litters.
This is not to say all breeders of feeder rats won't have pet quality rats. Smaller feeder breeders may go for colour/pattern in their colony for fun, feeding off the ugly ones to their reptiles.
Checking rescues in your area may produce young rats from people who kept them as pets not realizing they had a male and female. Or people who grew tired of their pet rat and wanted to get rid of them.
