Breeding age?

tempest Jun 29, 2004 10:54 PM

What do you guys think about breeding a pair of ten year old Cal Kings that have never been bred before?

10 years old is probably too old for producing good eggs.

I wouldn't think age would be a problem. I have friends who have bred 20-year-old kings. Not that ALL would do that, but it's an indication breeding can proceed quite successfully well into the teens. How the fact that they've never bred might factor in, i couldn't say. Keep us posted if you try it--but it's a little late in the season to just be considering this. Are you talking about next year, or this year? Was the pair brumated?

I'm thinking ahead to next year. Thanks for your response!

It might take a couple of years of the right cycling to get them to breed, but I don't know of any reason that would make breeding impossible. Ten years old is only middle age for a king.
