Need Advice on a Hatchling...

Lucien Jun 30, 2004 01:16 AM

I was checking on one of my eggs who's clutchmate hatched today and the egg literally exploded between my fingers with the least little bit of pressure.. (barely enough to pick it up. I wasn't rough handling it) The Clutchmate is alive and moving... quite well right at the moment but it didn't get to absorb the egg yolk.. indeed didn't even appear attached to it when it came out in my hand. Should I worry about that or just keep the same schedule as with my other hatchlings? Will it need to eat sooner? I've never had this one happen so figured I'd ask....I've put her back in the incubator for now on some clean, moist paper towels..

Whoa that's weird. I guess it didn't feel like hatching itself out? j/k

If it wasn't able to absorb its yolk.. I wonder how long it was unattached in the egg? Cuz it might still have some food on its tummy from that, but if it doesn't have that yolk sac to draw its food from, it'll probably need some mini-mealies.

It was definately wierd. I think the baby was in the process of pipping the egg it just hadn't gotten all the way through the outer shell yet...And when I picked it up.. the pressure inside just burst. It had quite a bit of liquid to it and the baby itself had the little slit in the tummy where the yolk should have been attached.. indeed had a small bit attached to it but nothing more. The rest of it stayed in the egg when the hatchling came out in my hand. Right now she seems absolutely fine though skinnier than her clutchmate. I'm going to give her a day or so before I try to feed her. Just to make sure everything is good then I'll try and assist feed some small mealies. I got lots of them.. *L* See what happens. She's another of my dbl. het tang albino/blizzard hatchlings.

Leave her on the moist paper towels untill she absorbs the sack or it falls off. make sure to check her over , sometimes the egg yolk sticks to them like unshed skin.
She should be fine, one i had earliar this year absorbed what didn't fall off in a few days. They will look much thinner in the stomach area, but as soon as she starts eating it will fill out.
Also I would just try feeding her after her first shed.
