fecal floatation

gothra Jun 30, 2004 07:07 AM

I just bought a microscope and the "Understanding Reptile Parasites" book; I plan to check the fecals for my 7 leos on regular basis; however, I have trouble finding sodium nitrate solution over here in Hong Kong; are there any substitutes? don't want to try the sugar solution, it'll get the microscope all sticky. Thanks.

Also, Can I use the same flotation method to check if the crix I bought have parasites?

Wow, GREAT idea!!! I never thought of doing fecals myself. It would be so much more assuring to be able to check whenever I want. I also have other pets that would benifit from it as well. For some reason my vet clinics do not like doing fecals. The vets just seem to treat whatever they "think" is wrong, with no actual proof, it drives me nuts. I am sorry, I have no idea how to help you.

How would the sugar solution get the microscope sticky? Are you using slides and cover slips? There's a product called Fecasaol. It would probably be too expensive to ship to Hong Kong, but you can ask any local vets if they will sell you some.

What part of HK are you from? I was just there a few weeks ago.

I live in Lantau Island. It's so hot these few days (almost 37 deg), so you're lucky you came a few weeks ago. What do you think of Hong Kong, personally I don't like HK that much...

With the "fecasol", I am a bit reluctant to ask the vet; thinking that he might not like it; ie. I am not experienced to do it/ I don't trust him...etc.

Yup, I visited Lantau Island too to see the Buddha statue. Then we stopped by Tai O to pick up some salty fish. lol

I don't really like Hong Kong either, but it's just my personal bias. I'm from a semi-rural town in Kansas, so I'm not used to having everything so scrunched up, including the winding roads. I also associate Hong Kong with some family members there I'm less than thrilled to spend time with.
