Great Basin Rattler?

HLuterman Jun 30, 2004 01:16 PM

I'm guessing it's a Great Basin Rattler, but I thought I'd see what you folks think. Found near Bryce Canyon, UT at about 7,000 ft. This is the best pic I could get without disturbing it (wasn't too keen on getting it grumpy).

Looking at the pattern and the banded tail, I'd say it's either a Western Diamondback or a Mojave Rattler. However, I am certainly no expert.
Cheers!

It's not a Great Basin Rattlesnake(Crotalus viridis lutosus), but closely related. It looks to me like a Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis oreganus), which is a subspecies of the same species as the Great Basin Rattlesnake. Both belong to a group of Rattlesnakes known as the Western Rattlesnakes. There are 9 subspecies, 8 of which occur in the United States. The type species is the Prairie Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis viridis).
