Salamanders

Pseudosilence Jun 30, 2004 01:35 PM

I've been observing and photographing many salamanders in the napa valley. Mostly Dicamptodonts, Taricha, and Andies. I still find Adult Pacific Giant Salamders in the middle of summer, right out in the open (I hear that seeing adults is rare, I guess I'm blessed).THe only salamder I've never seen is the California TIger. I know there are breeding sites in Sonoma and west of Sierra Nevada. Napa is right in the middle, are there any tigers in Napa county or has all the agriculture destroy summer dens. a simple yes or no is all I ask. Dont give any locations for their protection.

I've seen several in the area. Mt.Tamalpias is a good place. Don't worry about protecting them, plenty of people know about Mt. Tam. and I doubt a bunch of people are going to rush and and try to nab one based on my post.
I found some larvae in a creek last week in Sunol out near Livermore, but I'm not sure what type of salamander they're from.

Cheers
Jim

you can find them 5 minutes from my house near petaluma. common after first heavy rains of november, but development here is wiping them out. moved over 20 off road(or they all would of been pavement pizza), in one nite last november, too bad nobody seems to care/jon
