Does the color your leo is have to do with the temperature you keep it at???

wesley928 Jun 30, 2004 02:29 PM

I just bought a SHTCT and he was like the sun!! After about four weeks he looked a lot duller than he did when I first got him. At first I thought, O, he's just got to shed again and then he'll look bright again. But he shed and he still looks dull; he's also getting more spots on his head.
I have a heat rock in his cage. do you think he needs a heat lamp??
What can I do to REVERSE this!!!
thanks

YES!! he dose need a heat lamp, and you should definatley take out the heat rock!!! thise things are very dangerous! I'm sure lots of other people will post in greater detail about the no-nos of using heat rocks, but they can burn your lizards stomach very badly!

the spots and dullness are natural. they can change colors after they shed. yea, temp can affect the color, and so can the substrait color you keep them on, but the dullness and spots are because of the age, and changing because of the age.

You have a stressed out leopard gecko due to the environment you have him in. Get the heat rock out and go to a UTH pad (under tank heat pad). Be sure you have a moist warm hide box and additional dry or moist hide boxs on the cooler side of the tank. Cruise through some of the sponsors (at the top of the page) web sites and read the care sheets.
Color changes indicate many possibilities including illness, but you need to get that heat rock out it is much to hot for leopard geckos and not an ideal source of heat for your gecko.
Good Luck

My leos tend to be brighter when they are eating well-gutloaded foods as opposed to just oatmeal/bran whatever. If they stop eating for awhile my leos also get dull-colored, but once they start eating again, they look just as good as before.
