Help! Thin Gecko Who Won't Eat!

ribbitt Jun 30, 2004 05:30 PM

I put my two girls in a small container today as I was cleaning their cage and noticed that one of them is rediculously skinny and small compared to her sister who is gorgeous with a fat tail. She isn't growing like the other one and her tail is getting thin. They both have plenty of food and are not competing for it. She is weaker too....she just lets me scoop her right up and she used to skiddle away. I tried separating her and feeding her but she just gets stressed by the food. I don't wanna lose her One more thing, her tail is very short and stubby to begin with...does that have to do with her not eating? Thanks!

#1 - SEPARATE THEM!!! It could be that the bigger girl is a food-bully, so you need to separate them so the smaller can get to the food. OR it could be that the smaller one has parasites, in which case the bigger one could catch them - NOT GOOD!

#2 - What all have you tried feeding her?

Ok, I'll separate them at once. I've been feeding crickets but I've switched to mealworms because I have a frenzy of ants because of the crickets and I've fed a couple of waxworms. She is tired too, closing her eyes a lot. Poor thing.

is she active at all when the lights are off, at nighttime?

I'm pretty sure she is somewhat active at night. I separated the two last night and gave Caboose (thin leo) Her share of a lot of food.....mealworms and two crickets....she didn't eat the crickets and I think she may have eaten like, one mealworm. And now her sister isn't eating! But I think that is because she shed yesterday. Is that normal for them to not be hungry after a shed? Thanks!

Yeah, they usually don't eat after having shed. Try again in a couple of days.

If she doesn't eat the crickets or mealies, try superworms, or silkworms. You can also try stimulating her appetite with waxworms or pinkies - but those are ONLY as treats - not as a main staple.

If that doesn't work, we'll go from there.
