Why does my new beardie.....

micah01 Jun 30, 2004 06:38 PM

open his mouth while basking? Probably a silly question, but thought I'd ask anyway.
Thanks

It's how they expell excess heat. Kind of like how a dog pants. Same difference.

Cute though isn't it?

Thanks,
I didn't think it was a problem. I thought he might have been thirsty though so I gave him a drink, but still did it. So I gave him a bite to eat, still to no avail he still did it so I thought I'd ask.
Thanks for the help.
Micah

Yep, totally normal. All I'd say is that if you notice him doing it ALL the time you might want to make sure your temps aren't a too hot in the enclosure. But sometimes they're just too lazy to move out of the basking spot and they just gape so they don't overheat.

That is their way of thermoregulating without moving. In order to keep from getting too hot they open their mouths to cool down.
