albino 5 lined skink

toddbecker Jun 30, 2004 06:47 PM

Here is a photo of a little guy I caught outside of my house. I am Northern KY and we have quite a few of the normal versions of these running around near my house but this is the first time I have ever seen an albino (actually the first time I have seen any albino animal in the wild). I managed to catch it and now it is living comfortably in a terrarium. I hope you like it. Todd

I am sorry about the blurry photo but it was the best I had .. and a quick correction is that I live in Northern TN not KY. Todd

It is the only one I have ever seen or heard of. I did post it on the skink forum and no one else had seen it either. The thought of breeding it has crossed my mind but I have to do some research because I am not really a lizard person. I normally deal with the large pythons, but it is definitely something I am going to look into. Thanks again for the comments. Todd

No problem. This little one is not much more than a hatchling so it will be quite awhile. Todd

Hello Todd
Hi Nick:
That's a great looking animal and certainly a rare individual. I do believe it is the first one I've seen a photo of. Luckily five-lines are fairly easy to raise so there should be very little problem there. Being such a young lizard though you want to make sure it has access to water and a moist area. Baby skinks and anoles are prone to dessication. Just watch to be sure the baby drinks from leaves,a shallow dish, or whatever. They grow really fast. This should be a beautiful animal as an adult.
Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the advice and I am looking forward to researching these guys and seeing what I can do. Hopefully I will be able to find it a mate and breed them. Todd

Hello:
If it grows up to be a male you're in luck because you could breed it to 3-4 females for more hetero babies. If it is a female you get one shot a year. It's a little ways off for that though. Keep us posted. Good luck!!!

Please e-mail me at thekidgecko@comcast.net if you do decide to breed him/her. I would buy any of the babies for a good price or the albino itself if you decide not to breed it.

http://www.zo.utexas.edu/research/txherps/lizards/eumeces.fasciatus.html

and also note: Females keep there five lines throughout there lives, but males turn a brown with a reddish head

you should use some sort of lay box so it will be eaisier to find eggs if you breed it

PLEASE BREED IT!!!!!!!!!!! It is SUCH a BEAUTIFUL animal!!!!!!! I would buy hets or an albino from you for a great price without hesitation!
