Can chams hear?

zag Jun 30, 2004 08:02 PM

I've been meaning to ask this for a while... Can chameleons hear, and if so how? I noticed that they don't have a visible 'ear' membrane like many lizard species.

They sense low frequency vibrational sounds only. They would be sensitive to a bass speaker, but don't really hear human voices, other music, or other pets for example. Sometimes keepers say their chams respond when they talk to them...well they are watching your lips and face move!

does that mean they are very sencitve to drums cause right next to the cage i will be keeping my chameleons cage there are drums behind the wall

They could be if the drums are very loud and send vibrational noise through the wall. Have someone watch the chams while they are playing. If they act stressed or restless it may be bothering them.
