My igg has started to climb!!!!!

mike d Jun 30, 2004 08:24 PM

now i know to most people this seems like a small thing and kind of wierd but to people who have read my previous posts on my iguana he has some problems from a problemed past with his previous owner..

Anyways i have always had a log in his cage and he always looked at it but never climbed on it he tried the first few days i had it in there but he didnt have any luck. and his cage is made of plastic mesh.. adn he ahs nver tried to climb either... so anyways i was up in my room feeding him and my hedgehogs and spending time with them. and i closed the door on his cage and as i was walking away i herd a noise in his cage so i turned around and there he was climbing up on his log.. he was having a little trouble but he made it talk about a happy owner!!! so i went down stairs and i came back up and he was on the floor in his ussual spot so i didnt think anything of it. and as i got closer he arched his back and did the ussul head bob.. and then all of a sudden he ran at teh mesh and scaled it fast and in no time he was looking at me face to face giving me a funny look... i wish i had the camera... but i guess he can climb now...lol but he doesnt climb straight he always goes to teh right... which makes me think that he still has a minor problem. i am thinking he still has something worng in his head

anyways just figured i would post that... sorry it was so long i am so happy... guess i have to find some stuff that he can climb on now to get up higher.. if you ahve suggestions please post them!!

Big congrats hun. Until you are sure of his capabilities I would keep it short and sweet That way a fall cant injure him too badly.

Wow, congratulations on your ig's attempts at climbing! Looks like there's hope after all, eh?

You mention a log and that the cage is made of mesh. What I've noticed with all our igs is that they have a really hard time climbing the kind of logs and branches we tend to put in our cages -- because we have to remove the bark to sterilize them. We've even tried sawing grooves into the branches, but without much luck. They look like they're trying to climb a greased pole.

So I recently came up with an idea of tying rope around the branches -- I did something that looks like a blanket stitch around the branch. I know that doesn't say a whole lot and I wish I could take a pic, but it's nighttime and the igs are sleeping. LOL I'll get a pic out for your tomorrow. At any rate, it works wonders and it's fairly quick and easy to replace if it gets dirty, shredded, etc.

We also started adding ramps and hammocks made of screen mesh. Your ig may be finding it too difficult to climb the mesh walls because he has to climb straight up, as opposed to going up a ramp which is at an angle and easier to climb. This has also made it much, MUCH easier for our igs to get around their terrarium. Again, will send pics to show what I'm talking about.

Until then!

That is so AWESOME!!!! I bet you are really happy. Maybe you can make his cage tall again. That is just great news. Good luck and I hope he keeps on climbing.

Mike~

Forest is a free roamer so I don't know squat about cages but I really liked Iwana's suggestion of rapping roap around branches. I use ramps for Forest.

I used 2 little hinges to connect 2 pieces of wood & put grass carpet on them to help Forest climb. I made a couple so he has one to use to get up & down from his love seat out in front of the house. I think you can see it in his pool picture (the pool that he STILL hates).

It's not much but I took a couple pics for ya. I don't know how big your ig is but you could always make them narrower as you need for his cage.

Not much but hope it helps.

what i am thinking of doing is getting the shelving that you can use to put in closets the white stuff you can buy at home depot.. and making teh ramps very long and not steep.. so it will have a ramp and then a flat area he can sit on and then go to teh next one and so on until it reaches all the way to the top of the cage...

either that or i will make it two level and have a heat light and uvb light on each level and he can choose. and still ahev teh ramps and stuff on there are well. tomorrow i an going to bring him in teh back yard and see what he can climb that is out there. we have lots of tree and shrubs.. so hopefully he can climb some of that..
