Here's a couple of pictures from June 29th (yesterday). This is a hatchling, any guesses on what species it is?
He's less then 2 inches snout to vent.

Take it easy,
Brad

Where did you find them?
The look a lot like Panamint Alligator Lizards, Elgaria panamintina, which is a federal species of concern. It's range is restricted to Inyo and southeastern Mono counties in CA.
Great pics btw!

That's right it's an Elgaria panamintina from the Whites.
I believe they are only state protected at this time and honestly, I really don't think they should be. They might be seldom seen but that is mainly because people are rare in their preferred habitat. I have seen a total of 5 in 2 different canyons now. All were found on only 3 different occasions in the field. The last time out, I only saw the little neonate I photographed but last year, in one short time frame I found 3. I'm certainly not trying to brag, as it is nothing to brag about. I'm merely trying to make a point that they don't seem to be in any trouble and are doing quite well.
Thanks for looking,
Brad
