Super Corn Snake???

EB924 Jul 01, 2004 01:29 AM

I work at a pet store and we just got a new shipment of reptiles in. We got some corn snakes and the breeder/distributor sold us what he claimed was a super corn snake. Now i wasn't the one who spoke with him, thw owner did that and just told me what the guy said. He said the snake was 3/4 corn and 1/4 king snake. Now i've heard of Jungle corns (we had some recently) but i've never heard of one of these. In fact, i was under the impression that when you breed two different species of snakes, their offspring would be infertile. I could be wrong of course, and that's why i'm here. I'm just wondering if this snake is actually a so called "super corn" or something else. Either way it's one beautiful snake. It's BRIGHT orange and yellow. Looks something like the creamsicle corns i've seen in pictures but with more yellow in it. Perhaps it's actually a creamsicle but i can't say for sure. Just like the creamsicle it's got those bright orange blotches on the back, but on the rest of the body where it would be a lighter shade of orange it's a bright yellow instead. Sorry for the long question. Anyone have a guess at what it is?

You should be selling it as a jungle corn, as that is what it is, due to the mixture of corn and king blood.

Jungle corns are not infertile. Only certain species when bred together create infertile offspring.

And also make sure that you label it as a HYBRID!

...a hybrid between a corn and either a pine or bullsnake (I don't recall which). If your 'corn' is part kingsnake, though, then it's a jungle corn (hybrid). I'm not aware of any corn-bull/king/pine hybrids which are sterile.

If you want more details, your best bet is to ask the people over in the hybrid forum. They'll know more about it...

I've seen 'jungle corns' and they are beautiful!! Sounds like that is what it is. How much are they selling it for? I've seen most jungles go for $100 plus.

If a jungle corn is a corn/king cross why do they sell for so much more money? If it were a dog or cat it would be considered a 'mutt' and there fore sell for less.
Just always wondered since the jungles I've seen go for $100 plus dollars. They are real pretty though.

I think that's pretty much the answer to your question. No, I'm not being a smarta...leck *g* From what I can tell with the snake hybrids, the more attractive the results the more expensive the snake.

First off, most snakes won't voluntarily interbreed between species. This varies though, and more closely related species may naturally interbreed if their ranges overlap.

Secondly... california kingsnakes will eat other snakes. So not only do you have the problem of trying to get two snakes to mate that have no interest in mating with eachother, but you also need to keep one of the snakes from eating the other.

It's not an easy task. Ergo, the offspring are more expensive.

Furthermore, I recall hearing something about fertility issues. Corns and Kings may produce fertile offspring, but the pairings, IIRC, aren't as fertile as they would be if they were amongst members of their own species.

In the dog world even mutts go for high prices these days. Somehow we're led to believe that a poodle crossed with a pekenese (PeekaPoo), should be sold for 500-800 dollars. Sorry, but a peekapoo, or a Schnoodle (Schnauzer X Poodle)are nice dogs, but they are nothing special to command such a price. Then again who am I to argue if there are people who will pay $700.00 for a Schnoodle when you could purchase a poodle or Schnauzer for around 500.00

Well, we've had jungle corns before and this snake looks nothing like those. We had regular jungle corns (although some had some slightly different patterns than others) and we had one albino jungle. By looking at those snakes you could see that they had genes from both a corn and a king. They didn't quite look like either one. That being said, this new guy looks NOTHING like those jungles. It looks like a corn snake mostly. It's bright orange and yellow. Based on a picture i saw further down on this board it looks like an okatee (spelling). Some guy had a pic of his okatee that had deep orange blotches with yellow on the rest of the body. That's what this snake looks like except the orange is lighter, not nearly as deep as in those pics. Wish i could get a pic but that would be kind of difficult. Or maybe i'm too lazy to go to work on my day off just to take a pic

A Super Cornsnake is a jungle cornsnake bred back to cornsnake. So it ends up being 75% cornsnake and 25% kingsnake.Usually a jungle cornsnake is 50% cornsnake and 50% kingsnake.None of these are infertile.
