Suriname rehabilitation

Here's a pic of my male suriname that my friend gave me. He used to import from all over the world but has since stopped to concentrate on his vast captive bred colubrid collection. One of the last shipments he received was seme boas from Suriname/Guyana. This boa was one of the most heavily tick infested animals we had ever seen. You can still see some scarring on his neck from the ticks. There were probably close to a hundred of them in a huge mass on his neck. Besides that, he was emaciated and dehydrated. I can't believe they actually shipped this animal. My friend was going to euthanize it out of pity, but he gave it to me for free to see if I could do anything with it. After being quarintined, deloused, rehydrated, and warmed up his appetite came back. I've been feeding him six to seven thawed mice at a time until he puts on a little bit more weight, then it's on to rats to bulk him up. He is still nowhere near his optimal weight for his length, but he has never regurgitated or refused a meal. After two sheds and getting all the old, stuck on, crappy sheds off of him I was suprised to how nice his colors actually were. I don't think his face will ever have the nice pointed snout of an suriname again, but as long as he keeps trying to tag me and eat, I'm happy. I wish I had a picture of the "before" him. It is night and day of how he's improved. I really hate to euthanize animals, and as long as they have a feeding response and some attitude I'll go the extra mile for them. I'm glad I did with this guy because now of course I need a female!

You are great for taking him in. He looks great! Poor little fellow. Can't wait to see him continue to improve. Keep up the great work!

Always great to see another rescuer who cares about reptiles. ;D

Hugs!
