male or female?

ciliatus Jul 01, 2004 10:30 AM

hi people,

at what age of a tegu can you start guessing what sex it has?
and how can you tell? do you have to wait until a male developes his chin? at would age would that be visible?
the other way would be, to get lucky and see a male everting its hemipenis while doing his business, right?

thank you

ingo

You can always have them probed by your vet to see what sex they are. As for when they start to show signs of what sex they are I could not tell you mine are almost two years old now and my two girls look pretty much the same as my male. If you do decide to have them probed please be sure to have someone who knows what they are doing do it for you as you could injure them. Good luck

thank you, well perhaps you are right, and going to reptile-experienced vet would be the best.

I have 3 arg. bw and a red. My red and my male bw are obvious in their signs and they're probably only 8 mo. - 10 mo. a piece I believe. Maybe a year. My b/w has veen obvious for 4 months now. My female b/w is pretty obvious as well. However, I have one that seems to have traits similar to my obvious male and my obvious female. I had originally guessed it was a male, and my vet agreed. I'm taking it back in tomorrow for a second guess, because since then, its began to look a lot more feminine in that its tail isn't as wide as my other mails, nor is its head or jaw at all comparable.

first, thank you for your experiences. i would like you
to take a shot at my tegu if you dont mind. tell me if you
need any special photos.

I'd put 90% on that being a male. This chin is pretty large, but I don't know if thats enough to say its male. But based on that, the rather large head, I think the most obvious thing is the width of his tail. He's got a very thick tail.
