BREEDING QUESTIONS FIRST TIME BREEDERS!

Anson Jul 01, 2004 10:34 AM

I am trying to breed my beardies for the first time and I have some questions. The male is getting a black beard and bobbing his head at the female. She is waving her arms at him. He then jumps on her and bites the back of her neck. Then nothing happens. Is there something wrong with my male. I don't see any ummmm. connecting of any kind. I thought I saw her lift the tail a couple of times and still nothing. Most of the time she does not lift her tail or move it at all. Should I seperate them and try again. They are young so were not brumated the first year because I heard they need you don't need brumation the first time. Is that false information. Do I now have to wait till next year. They are about a year and a half old.

Most times, it takes a first time breeding male, a few times to figure it out. It is instinct but I'm sure there is a little technique to it, & that they have to figure out. lol
As long as he isn't drawling blood, I would leave them together for a while. He's not going to figure it out, if he is kept away from her.

Is she only arm waving or is she doing the long slow pushups ??
From what I've seen, I think that's an indicator of readiness of the females.

Good luck.

She is waving and doing long slow push ups. Whew! those are normal then? I thought something was wrong with her or she was really frightened of him.
Does it matter that they were not brumated this first time. They were still kind of young so I didn't want to risk brumating them.
They have been in together in a really big cage for three days now and he keeps trying but no luck yet. The female looks totally irritated with him. She was going to get him and prancing in front of him every few minutes but she is just sitting on her branch and sulking today.

Why would you think she is old enough to breed, if she isn't old enough to brumate?

Was not brumated due to the fact she had been treated for Coccidia and I wanted her to recuperate from that. I guess it was my own fear of possibly harming her during brumation that kept me from brumating her. She did kind of dig under her newspapers and brumate a bit on her own as far as eating was concerned but I never lowered the temps.
