Sexing hogs...

JimRogers Jul 01, 2004 10:46 AM

I just got into snakes a couple of years ago and this year marks my first successful breeding. My hogs are due to hatch in about a week. I've heard they are more difficult to sex than other species. Is this true? What't the best and most accurate way?

Thanks for any help,

Jim

Actually the are very easy to sex just by looking at the length of the tail. Compared to most other colubrid species we've worked with, Hogs are by far the easiest to sex as hatchlings or as adults. Males have longer thicker tails with a stronger offset from the rest of the body while female tend to have short little "piggy" tails. You see what I mean once those babies land. Just look at 'em all and I am sure you'll see the difference.
Good luck!
