10 month old eastern eating habits

kevdono8 Jun 20, 2003 02:23 PM

Since I acquired this baby eastern box she has been eating mostly earthworms (her favorite) and mealworms. She will eat ground-meat and chicken (I limit to feeding her this maybe once a month).

My concern is that she is not eating and vegis or fruits. I consistently offer her a varity of vegis and fruits including lettuce, strawberries, banana, peaches, apples, radishes, corn, orange and others.

I have read that young ones will eat mostly meat.

Should I be concerned and at what age will they start eating the fruits and vegis?

hatchlings and yearlings mostly eat a high protein diet which would include live insects and such. As they grow older they develope a taste for plant matter. I wouldn't worry about it to much yet. It could be she is also very picky. Just keep trying different veggies and fruits and I'm sure you will stumble across something it likes.

Mine will rarely touch plant matter until about a year. If I chop everything finely and mix it up well, my guys will generally clean their plates at any age, but will still pick out the meat first. I generally go with a 60% meat, 40% fruits/veggies slop mix for their first year, then put them outdoors after that. My '01 youngsters are plowing through just about anything I give them, my '02 baby just polished off a nob of cauliflower.

No worries, just mix stuff up well and give them time.
