double-crest on the crestie's neck/back

umop_apisdn Jul 01, 2004 03:18 PM

well, i just got incredibly lucky yesterday. a friend of mine works at a local petstore and they just got in a crested gecko. now she knows ive been searching high and low for a female, so she notified my right away. its still a juvie, but it was such a nice orange flame that i had to buy it, and so far it looks like a female. if it turns up that way, itll be real nice because that means i got a nice looking female for the price you would pay for babies! anyway, i was just looking at her rows of crests and i realized....she doesnt just have a single row of spikes on each side...theres actually two rows on each side, where one sticks up and one sticks to the side. ill get pics soon. but has anyone else seen this? all my other 3 cresties have only single rows.

well here you go. i just took this picture of the crest. i tried to highlight the area where you can see the double-crest best, but it still didnt come out too good. since this is still a young one, im hoping this wont be something it will just grow out of. i think it looks awesome!

That is what's typically referred to as a "Fur" crested gecko.

I've only seen a handful of Cresteds with that heavy of a crest, so I'd say it's pretty uncommon. I don't think it's something that a lot of people would pay more for, but uncommon nonetheless.

Very cool find.

sweet anthony! thanks. i definitely checked over my other cresteds a good few times in the past couple of days to make sure i wasnt just seeing something. i think if you possibly crossed it with another crested with a nice, long, well-defined crest you could get some neat looking double-crests! but like you say, doubt its anything people will drop more money for. anyway, it just makes me excited to have my hands on something that isnt often seen.

When it comes to Cresteds its certainly a eye of the beholder situation.
Ive noticed over the last few months that when it comes to standard..there is no standard !

Fires/flames/DARKfires are described as tans reds and blacks.
Yellows are called orange and or red.
Juvies too young to sex are being shipped as males or more likely females.

I think that the trait certanly would fall into the desirable catagory nad thus a deal in itself. But marketing it would be your next step

That sounds about right to me put a $500 price tag on em and everyone will want one.

haha! anyone know where i can get another one? i wouldnt mind trying to breed for this. im dying to get something breeding anyway. i just cant get my hands on a female. lets see how this one ends up sex-wise, although my friend who got me to buy it is adamant in her opinion its a female. i sure hope so.

I have written an article, including your "Fur/Giant Cross" and the two other Categories of Rhacodactylus ciliatus. What you have is a Fur or Giant Cross. What this means is that you have a Crested that had the parents of a Giant or Fur and a normal or both parents were crosses them selves. So when a Normal is bred with a Giant you get the Fur/Giant Cross. 100% Giants or Furs are VERY and rare. I have done lots of research to try and track down some of these with little results. I have a colony of Furs and Crosses and the two other Categories of Cresteds. Crosses sell for 250-350 and Giants sell for $375-$500. I have limited numbers of them and have let very few out of my collection and I know another a few other Big Name breeder who have a few in their collections. You have a very uncommon Crested and I would hope you try to keep it's offspring pure as possible. I will be selling me article for $5.00 along w/o shipping.
I brought a few to Kansas City for Anothony to see. The Furs and Giants are much more rare and valuable than the Pinstripes, which have been showing up a lot. There is a market for these , but the light hasnt been shed on these yet. Look for more to come!
