Why is this??? veilded question.

andydy464 Jul 01, 2004 03:42 PM

my female veiled is almost 1 year old and recently she has been displaying a lot of orange dots, and semi stripes.

before this she would only be green or when she got mad, green and black. i saw her once with some yellow coming through but that lasted about an hour.

she has been green with the orange for a couple days now and i didnt know if this was normal or something i should worry about. everything else about her has been A .
could it mean she might need to lay infertile eggs soon? i dont really know what to look for if thats the case.

yup - she will soon be laying a clutch on infertile eggs. The coloration is showing that she is receptive - if their were a male around to notice - LOL! Pretty colors, huh?

Typically it should be in about 4 weeks. I emphasize "typically" b/c Luna, my veiled, strung me along (and this very supportive and tolerant forum, I might add...) for 5 months before she FINALLY laid 42 eggs in May (began appetite change and color back in December!). Have you noticed a decrease in appetite lately? Even though these are not fertile it depletes a lot of calcium so you will need to make sure she is getting plenty. Silkworms and butterworms are a good natural source. Make sure she is well hydrated, too.

In a couple weeks you will want to provide her with a laying tub. I used a combo of sand (you can get builder's or play sand at home depot) and coco-fiber which worked really well. She will dig and lay so you need to make sure the soil will not collapse on her. It needs to be deeper than she is long and moist (not wet).

I will say that even though Luna had been wandering and restless off and on for a long time she became VERY restless two days before she actually laid.

I am sure you will have other questions but this should get you started.

once i got home today i went and checked back up on her. she was laying on the bottom of the cage. i have never seen her walk around the very bottom before. she is really creepin me out.

do i just stick a big bucket full of sand and stuff in there or something?

I would get something in there pronto. If she cannot find a suitable place to lay she may become eggbound which can be a real problem. I used a deep plastic plant pot. Moist, not wet sand and coco-fiber. If you do not have that on hand (probably not, huh?) Just put potting soil in it, tamp it down so it is lightly packed. Stick your finger in and see that it holds it shape. make sure she has branches into and out of the pot. from the ground as well as from her main plant/vines

She will possibly begin to dig tonight. Just let her do her thing - it may take 24 hours for the whole process, but just let her be. Try not to peek in on her or disturb her. Once she is done be sure she has access to water and within a day she will probably start eating a LOT!

keep us posted!

the last 2 photos show her digging in her tub to give you some idea (she is missing part of her tail that's why it looks so funny!)
