Shredded Pine good for mice??

LeeFobes Jun 20, 2003 02:28 PM

I was wondering if " All Pet Pine " was a good substrate for feeder mice? its like pine cones shredded up into little pellets, its very absorbant, cheap, and last 2x as long as the other shred ive been getting. the website is www.naturesearth.com

it says no chemicals added, and its kiln dried. Can my BP eat these mice if they live in the substrate?

I used to use that for my mice, but it's pretty expensive, for the same money you can buy 3 cubic feet of shaved pine bedding. They both work the same in my experience. I use pine bedding for all my mice and hamsters, and shredded aspen for my snakes. I've heard that pine can create respiratory problems for the mice, but I've never seen it. My snakes are 100% healthy feeding on mice that have been raised on pine bedding.

I don't know what started the whole thing with Pine bedding but people have been using it for years with no problems with their feeder rats. Cedar I can see.. it has way too much aromatic oil in it... But Pine, properly dried out, has almost no smell to it really... well not pine smell anyway. I've never had a problem with using it.. either with my snakes or with my rats and gerbils..
