You lucky girl. Good luck on finding a cute crested.

As for safe plants, I have heard pythos are safe, just make sure what they come in is safe as well (ie. no fertilizers, pesticides...). I'm not sure how common they are. Once you get a big plant, my favorite little ones are air plants. They don't need any soil so they make for an easy clean up. If you find a good place to get safe plants and they ship, let me know. I've been looking for a long time. There are a few good ones in the US. This site is awesome for ideas http://www.blackjungle.com/. Good luck, post pics

Yah that's just my problem right now
I don't know how plants can be toxic i have one right now that;s got big leaves and there's no way it can eat it and it has waxy leaves. I have no idea what it is, its from bloody Ikea.
I know nothing about plants :P

what are air plants? They sound really interesting

lizzylizard Jul 01, 2004 09:50 PM

They are small little plants that you can glue to whatever you want. You just need to soak them in water every week or two. Not having soil is a big plus. So many things can infest soil, when that happens you usually have to get rid of the whole plant. It happend to me, it was discusting. I disinfected the tank twice before I found out were they were living. Here is a picture of my old set-up. The little plants are air plants, they have some scientifict name I can't remeber.

What do u house in there it looks like a real nice setup. what did u use for the floor was it expensive and where can i get it. what ever u have in there must enjoy its home.

lisa_cristin Jul 04, 2004 04:30 AM

It was my set-up for my leos. I had to separate them in a new enclosure because they didn't get along very well. The floor is natural slate and it cost me $1 a pound. A little pricy, but it looks nice and conducts heat great.

I know for sure that hoya and pothos are safe for gekco, i use them for a while with no problem. You can get these plant at most hardware store or florist. My leo love to hide and sleep on the earth under the big leaves and it kind of makes him another humid hide That plant in my set up is a hoya.

awesome thank you, ahah i have the same background as you :D
see!

I have used quite a few in my terrarium with mixed results. The air plants, tillandsia do work well. You can mount them right on the glass w/ some silicone (just be careful not to get the roots) and just spray them enough so drops of water collect between the leaves. Bright light, but not too bright. I had a dracaena that lasted quite some time, and is very pretty w/speckled leaves. I'm not sure if crested geckos are tropical, so this might not be a ny help, but just about any succulent that does not have spines works great. They are arid/semi-arid plants though. Pothos is a good one. Do cresteds ever eat plant matter? Leos don't, so most any plant is OK w/a few exceptions. also try ponytail palm, most moss, and sanseveria (snale plant) works very well. If you want more info, e-mail me.

thank you so much for your reply.
No crested and leos don't eat their plants but i was reading all these warnings not to get toxic plants.
I guess its just a precaution

geckogrl6 Jul 02, 2004 12:27 PM

Also, if cresteds will tolerate higher humidity than leos, you can use a philodendron. They need to be fairly moist. They grow quickly, though, which could be good or bad. You can take cuttings easily, and end up with lots of plants for all your tanks, but they will also take over! Any nursery worker should be able to tell you which ones are potentially toxic. I had my dracaena in there for like year before it died of draught and calcium toxicity (due to my use of calci sand), and none of my 3 girls in there ever even took a nibble.

I have two favorite plants for my cresties. One is a smooth leafed pepperomia and the other is the plain ol' shiffelera. Both are pretty sturdy to be climbed on, and are safe. The neat thing is that both will regenerate, so when leaping cresties trash them (and they will!), you put in another and 'recycle' the other one. It will regenerate beautifully by the time the cresties trash the other one, so you can swap out the same two plants indefinately.

I've also heard that ficus are good, but my chameleon trashes his regularly, and they don't regenerate well.

Best of luck with you crestie! They're such fun to watch.

Leslie
