Ornate breeding question>>>>>>

buckroebeardie Jun 20, 2003 02:40 PM

Hello,

I am putting together a group of Ornates.
I was hoping to get everyone's opinion on a good male to female ratio for a breeding (hopefully) group. I plan to keep 10 or 12 turtles. They are living in a large outdoor pen.

Thanks for your input!!
Steve

I would almost say theres no hope for breeding this year if you don't have the turtles already. You could have some late year breeding when you do get them, but I would count on next year. If your pen is big enough (over 160 sqft for 10 turtles) I would go with a ratio of 3.7 . I would make the pen even larger then 200 sqft for that many turtles. I have 12 boxies and have a pen that is around 350 sqft and my 4 males still get into arguements over the ladies. To many males in a small pen will be troublesome.

Are you going to adopt these boxies, or are you going to buy wild caught?
