Mangrove Salt Marsh Watersnake Babies

PiersonH Jun 20, 2003 02:45 PM

I had a litter of 12 born 6/18 from a 2001 orange phase female. This was her first year giving birth and I must say, I am impressed with the size of the litter. All the babies were of the orange phase which was a bit of a surprise considering their father was a black and red phase. Pics of the babies can be found on the watersnake forum at www.field herpers.com.

Help me out here, is that a herd, a gaggle or a pod? If the photo wasn't taken on Sunday, it can't be a congregation!
Maybe, we can coin our own and call it a "knot" of newborns.
No? How about a "tangle"? Or is that "tango"? It takes more than two to tango, right?
Anyway, that's a whack of beauties you have there!! I have GOT to get pairs going! My problem is that I'm so far away that I have to "order" nerodia. This prevents me from selecting what I would consider "choice" and immaculate snakes that I would be willing to pair with my own.
This comes from personal experience as, my wife is perfect, and so am I so ... you get the drift ... well actually, considering my children ... yeah, I can understand where you get all orange phase. The gene pool is a murky one.
Love your stuff Pierson.

Thanks for the kind words Michael. I've got several here with your name on them (a really cool pattern aberrancy!). You don't happen to have a friend in Washington I could ship to do you?

Oh my goodness, in fact I do!!! It's a company where my brother-in-laws' nephew works. It's a custom broker warehouse, perfect for such things! And it's less than one mile from the border (45 minutes from my house).
I just need to know the exact arrival date (I inform them a day or two prior to arrival) and I get there a few hours early to witness delivery. This allows me to provide immediate care/attention to the little guys with less trauma.
