genetics discussion....

sledge Jul 01, 2004 11:39 PM

i was wondering if anyone has info on the way coloration and characteristics are passed down through collareds.

like with the yellowheads i see... is this gene passed down by breeding two yellowheads or can you get this with only one yellowhead.

i am wondering if the genes are anything like ball pythons where dominant and recessive genes can be reproduced and combined in some cases to create new patterns and markings.

is an albino collared possible? that would be the ultimate!

I have often wondered about collared color genes myself. With all of the color morphs of snakes perhaps there is a high instance of partial/ incomplete/ and or co-dominance in their genes. OR perhaps they just have a high instance of mutations in their genes. I would lean toward the former.
In collareds there is also a fair amount of sexual dimorphism, esp in color. But there are fertile females with color as brilliant as males and some males that are as (I hesitate to use the word, but) dull as most females. Is color a sexually linked or influenced trait or is it jsut a product of natural selection and sexual fitness? Very interesting discussion indeed. I think it would be a VERY interesting area to research.

Any ideas from the big collared breeders?

Laura
