Albinos

rowad Jun 20, 2003 02:55 PM

I am in love with albino tegus....especially the albino b/w and the reds. Is it true that the albinos are weaker then the colored tegus? I was told this by a trusted source but I guess I wanted everyone's imput..

Thanks,

.they(in my experience)are by no means week, but I do notice my female seems to have trouble seeing the food at times..she is still a very aggressive feeder...

Our albino is certainly not weaker than any of our other Tegus but she does have vision problems, just as Phil mentioned his does. She's never been good at hunting and chasing crickets, thus her diet has consisted of more rodents and ground meat. I think this has caused her growth to be a bit slower than Tegus fed lots of insects. Vision problems are pretty common in all albino animals.
I don't think I've ever heard of an albino B/W or a Red albino. I believe, so far, they've only occurred in the Blues.

Although it's rare in nature for albinism to crop up, it does happen with other tegus in captivity. From what breeders have told me it's a result of inbreeding.
(BTW Uno is adorable!)
