Importing Crested Gecko's

RyanCA Jul 02, 2004 02:51 AM

Are there any people that import wild crested gecko's. I was just wandering if wild caughts are still coming in the country.
Any help on the subject would be great.

As far as I know, I don't think NC is still allowing them to be exported.

If they do allow it, trips to New Caledonia are still extremely expensive, so going there to collect Crested Geckos for resale would not be worthwhile. I would guess that anyone that could bring Cresteds back from New Caledonia would probably keep them in order to diversify their bloodlines or for research purposes.

I purchased two hatchlings that had a wild caught father. The breeder mentioned that he had actually been smuggled out of New Caldonia as the Govt had shut down exportation of them. I didnt ask the how or why of it .Its probally a interesting story as I dont know why someone would risk it.
The breeder spent a lot of time showing me hiis set-ups and projects and I have every reason in the world to take his word at face value.
The two juvies are growing faster than anything I have, jump further and are more agressive than any I have .It does make me wonder if the gene pool might be a bit weak here in the States. Two specimens compared to another dozen is hardly a scientific survvey however .Still I figure they are valuable to help ensure my bloodlines stay strong. They at this point only show the brown of their father and little or no red of their mother. But Im hoping
