Novice to frogs (Lots of questions)

Atistaldi Jul 02, 2004 03:12 AM

Greetings and Salutations!
Well so we have a big 55 gallon tank sitting on top of our entertainment system. I thought it would be a good idea to stick some nice frogs in it and doll the entire thing up to look like a mini rainforest. Well here's what I have learned in the past few hours (Yes I'm *that* new to this.) Don't house different types of frogs together. Don't house alot of frogs together there territorial. And making a territium looks expensive and like a lot of work. I'm ready, I'm excited. There's a big reptile show here locally in about 2 weeks. I know they'll have PDF's there, maybe I can do something simple and functional with the aquarium in time to purchase frogs, if not I'll order some from someone that breeds them. I was looking over Black Jungle's website on how to make a terriaium. I'm sure it would make sense if you knew something about PDF or any frog for that matter. To a complete novice that doesn't know what Co-co fiber is it's rather complex. Can anyone out there direct me to links that can be of help to me? I really like the neon yellow looking PDF and some frogs that looked like black and white "Panda"? Help me get this started everyone? I'd like to have a mini rainforest on top of my entertainment system.

Thanks in advance!

Co-Co fiber is typically sold as a "brick" that you need to soak in warm water and called "Bed a Beast". A holding tank can consist of wet paper towels with plenty of plant cuttings and some empty black film canisters from hiding. As long as there is a complete glass top to maintain the humidity and hide spots you could keep frogs in a tupperware container for a long time. As for the 55 gallon being your first tank I would strongly suggest that you attempt a 10 or 20 gallon tank with a false bottom structure, cork background and water feature first. Here are some helpful links.

A 55 gallon tank is a fine starter tank, though many people will tell you it is too large. As for the frogs, those black and white panda bear looking ones are not darts, they are Brazillian Cave or Milk frogs and will get very large. Might I suggest that you look at either Dendrobates auratus or D. leucomales as your first frogs. Both of those species do well in groups, and in a 55 gallon tank you could comfortably house 6 or 7.

Go through the forum and find a post by Kyle1745 and check out his dart links page. You will find links to more information there then anywhere else.

we have a 55 gal. set up as a rain forest, with 3 different types of darts in it, who said you couldn't keep them together?
we have been breeding darts for years and we keep a rain forest in our living room(55 gal)it's much more amusing than a fish set up. Give us an e-mail and we'll give you some tips. It's not that expencive.
