Sick Bosc!!

tegu2002 Jul 02, 2004 10:05 AM

Hi, I bought a baby bosc monitor a couple of weeks back and recently he just hasn't been himself. He usually bites or at least tries to but recently he just sits there peacefully and lets you pick him up. Also he is not eating, he usually eats like a pig.

Does anyone know what is wrong with him???

Sounds like parisites to me. You might want to get it checked by a vet and have him/her do a stool sample. Most if not all wild caught animals have intestinal parisites that may or may not need treatment. I have a couple of wild caught monitors myself that have never given me a reason to treat them but im sure they have them. In your case you may need to have it treated.

The thing is that there are no vets in my area that have a damn clue about reptiles. My bosc is not wild caught, he is a captive bred and it all happened so suddenly last weekend. He seems to be getting better now but you can never be certain and I can't help pitying my baby. Is there anything I can do??

Hmmmmm... Where did you get this cb sav since there are very few people who have successfully bred them in captivity

Is this from someone you know personally or some dealer who could possibly have scammed you? Theres a lot of the latter going around.

If it truly is cb then parasites shouldnt be the problem, could be a stress factor. Also if you arent keeping it in a proper setup then it could be a number of other things. Dehydration, to cold or too hot, etc.

Whats your temps? ie ambient, cool side, basking(SURFACE)
What type of substrate do you offer?
How many USEABLE hides are in the enclosure?
Is it a screen top enclosure?
Humidity level %?
Do you offer a large water dish for soaking?
What are you feeding it and how often?

If you can answer these questions with certainty we may be able to help you further but i suggest in the meantime you keep trying to find a vet in your area.

>>I keep him at around the 80s

At around? Doesnt seem like you are being very exact! So i suggest you get a thermometer in there to be sure it at 80 to 85 degrees.

and he has a water bowl, something to climb on, 2 hiding spots,

What are you using for hides? If its the half logs or caves they sell in the petstore then toss them out because they offer to much space. Monitors only feel secure in a hide that touches all sides of its body, something they have to squeeze into such as cork bark or hollow logs about the size of your monitor.

and somle plants, im not sure about the humidity, what should it be? We feed him pinkies when he is hungry.

Humidity should be around 50% So if you have it in an aquarium setup i'd suggest putting a wooden or plexiglass top on it to keep in moisture. Screen tops are a no no! You will dehydrate your monitor. Also you should be feeding crickets and pinks everyday to a juvenile monitor, as much as it'll eat!
