djxmasterchief Jun 20, 2003 03:09 PM

I am trying to build an outdoor cage and i have no clue where to start. How much is it going to cost, the material, animal predation. I am trying to keep veileds and panthers outside, not on the same cage. so please help.

Hi-

I just made new outdoor cages and setup for my panthers. You can see some pics, cage plans on my site. The my cages are finished but I still need to finish up the plans on my site, but there is enough there to get you started. I made my cages 2'x2'x4' because I have 8 cages and limited space, if you only have one or two animals you can make them bigger. The ones I made were about $60 or less each. Take a look click on the pic below then click on CHAMELEON CAGE PLANS on the left of the screen. Hope this helps!

Hi-

I am in SoCal, and yes they are designed to keep out predators. I used 1/2" hardware cloth with PVC coating. I don't think you need to worry about raccoons as long as the cages are locked we have them here to. The frames are made of 2x2 wood. Hope this helps!

Hey, I live in Miami, too.

If you have a lot of racoons I'd be very cautious. They are pretty smart and can get into lots of things. But that depends where you live. I live in Kendall by 107 and don't really have many racoons near me. Lots of opposums, but they wouldn't do anything. If you have a closed porch, that would help.

If you want to still keep your chameleon outside, I'll warn you about the humidity that you may have to watch over. I'm really worried about my veiled that I've been keeping outside because the humidity was so high a few weeks ago. Anyway, I'd also keep any plants in the cage near the center so that nothing can claw at her through the hardware cloth. I used to have hamsters in a hardware cloth and wood cage a foot and a half off the ground, and something came and stabbed a claw into one the first day, and the other two the next. They used to sleep in a corner right by the edge of the cage.

Anyway, good look with your caging and let us know how it goes.
