Taking them out in public

bhdesigns Jul 02, 2004 02:59 PM

Anyone take their snakes with them out in public ever? I'm wondering how advisable this is. The reason I ask is because I'm going to be quitting my day job in 3 months to pursue my artwork full time which means doing lots of outdoor venues and I'd love to bring my little guy with me when he's older (in a year or two) but don't know how well that'd work out.

The only places I have took mine that would be public, is to my childrens schools, to help educate them on snakes, and let them see that they are not "slimy and gross." With all the problems lately, and how "most" people have a fear of snakes I wouldn't want to take mine out for a walk. So many states are trying to pass laws to ban snakes and other reptiles, that I wouldn't take that chance. That is why I don't tell too many people that I have snakes. I don't trust anyone. I don't want someone coming into my house and telling me I have to get rid of them.
This is just my 2 cents!!!!

yep........it is childish to walk around town with a snke ...especially since it is usually a BIG snake wrapped around the neck for the "shock value"....stoners do it alot.....

they are not toys...they are not for fun or for fear...strippers should not use them either...

Alice Cooper..well..it's kinda ok for shows...like some people do.....but not 100% cool

...so

for education and all...take it out in a bag and teach...OK...

.....for fear and shock...never..

like said..

we have enough problems as it is........

we don't need anything banned.....not BIG snakes.not venomous snakes.......not wild animals.or large birds or anything.....

I cannot keep hardly anything in my yard without a "zoning variance" and it costs $400 to ask for it..and they can still say NO and keep the dough$.....

....so

have fun...breed them and make money......

My wife is an artist, and we do several shows/festivals each year. I really don't think that's the best place for a snake unless there is going to be a specific educational spin on the show or festival as it relates to reptiles. If you are fortunate, you will be too busy talking with people about your art to deal with the snake. Save that for another venue. Good luck. Duffy

My boyscout troop for a reptile study meeting. now i only let a select older boys touch them and made sure they washed there hands infront of me before and after they touch my animals and i always had the animals in my hands and had the cages covered when the snake was not being showed to try and limit stress my snakes were ok they even ate after i i got home.

..Work with me. I work at a boarding kennel for dogs, cats, pets in general. Everyone at work wanted to see them. I have photos of them at work so everyone was like...'can you bring one or two of your snakes to work.'
I won't walk around in public with them however. I don't like people walking around with a snake on their sholders with the attitude of 'look at me. I have a hugh snake on me.'
Only a few neighbors know I have snakes and certain friends. I do take them out in my own back yard and occasionally in my front yard. Some folks will take a double look if I'm out front but don't come up to me wanting to see them.

keeping mind that the entire world wants to take away our snakes, and that many people do have a true fear of them it is unfair to everyone to take your snake out in public where others do not expect to run into a snake.
The other reason is, i am not sure of what medium you use for your art work, but many of the oil based paints would be unhealthy for the snake to come in contact with or breath all day long.
Thanks

It just never occured to me that it could be a 'shock' thing. But yeah, I can see how it would be. I guess because I've never been shocked by seeing a snake. I've always been drawn to them I was thinking it'd be a good crowd-drawer ONLY IF it would not be harmful to the snake. I'm very, VERY careful about my animals' care

And I work in glass and clays, no fumes or solvents there

Oh and one other thing, I keep seeing this stuff about herps being outlawed. Forgive me for being completely ignorant, but what on earth is *that* all about? Why does anyone care if someone keeps herps?

Thanks for answering all my questions of late

Kel

Don't feel dumb, i wish there were lots more people so accepting of reptiles. The newest in a long line of places trying to outlaw exotic pets is NY state. They are attempting to ban the owner ship of all Exotic pets, Boas, Pythons, Ferrets, Gerbils, you name it if it is not a cat or a dog NY state does not want it there. We have good luck blocking these bans most of the time, but this is the first State Ban we are facing, scan down a bit and you will see the information and the link to the ban info and how you can help.
Good Luck

I like to go to the park with my boas. There safetly tucked away in a big rubber maid till Im far away from people.People can still see me and what Im doing but even the scared ones will walk up and start a conversation. The whole idea is to let them approach you.The idiots you see walking in the park,on the trails with ten foot albino burmese should be shot. Those idiots trying to be cool are going to ruin it for all of us.
I just stay low key and Ive talked to police officers, park police, and the neo nazi game wardens.
As long as your not throwing your snake in someones face you should be fine. Also a great way to meet other people who own reptiles...Paul.

Plus, in some cities (such as mine) there are ordinances which prohibit reptiles in public places, resulting in a hefty fine if you do venture forth. I agree it's best to limit the number of people who are aware of your reptiles. All it takes is one overzealous snake hater to create a swirling mess in your life.
