lazy male beardie

scamp696 Jul 02, 2004 07:39 PM

I have a male and a female bearded dragon. The female is two yrs old. Her first mate died and last year, I bought a new male. They have pretty much ignored each other since the beginning. The male now parks himself on the highest spot in the tank and stays there, barely ever coming down. He has no interest in crickets and comes down for giant mealworms. It seems to be the only thing he will eat. The female eats veggies and some crickets, though not as much as she used to. She stays on the ground. My question is........ do you think if I introdused another beardie it would liven them up a bit? My first pair used to be all over each other and were constantly exploring the tank and stuff. These two just sit there. And if I di add a new one, male or female? The tank is 6'x4', plenty of room for three of them.

My male bearded is a little over a year old, and is the same way. He sits up on his perch about a foot off the bottom of the cage, and he rarely comes down. I did seperate my male and female when they were about 6 months old to prevent them from mating however. Have you considered seperating them? I wouldn't worry about this behavior though, because they all have different personalities. If they aren't as close in proximity anymore, it's probably only because they have gotten more territorial as they have aged. Wait for more people to respond, but I would recommend seperating them and letting them do their own thing. I know it's kind of sad to seperate them at first, but I think it's better for them to have their own space in the long run - even if it is a really big tank (which is great they have that much space by the way). I wish my 4' enclosures were 6' long in hindsight.

Here's my male sitting in his favorite spot.
