Turtle Rescue I need HELP!!!

Atlas511 Jul 02, 2004 09:16 PM

My friends a went to china town to eat lunch, we went into to a store that had a sign LIVE ANIMALS. We went in and saw a bunch of live RES and frogs I have not keep turtles for about three years because of the size of my burms and my growing leopard gecko colony but back to the story. I pointed to biggest turtle in the display tub and paid $6.99. I had no idea of the sex until SHE started laying eggs in the car on the way home. My intentions were to either let her go in a near by lake or my friend and i were going to keep her. I decided to keep her and luckily i have Leo eggs cooking, so i put the eggs in the Hova-Bator. I guess my real question is When will the eggs hatch and what temp should i incubate them at? Please reply soon!!

Just a thought, the eggs might not even be fertile. But the eggs should hatch in a few months (I think, I'll check back later).

Personally I would throw out the eggs, there are far too many sliders that need good homes already. Buying a turtle in Chinatown is not a rescue, it just encourages them to get more to sell.

i say, good for you for rescuing this turtle. This RES obviosly needed your help and you were there for her. Good Job! don't let anyone make you feel bad for taking it in i personally, if i see oogly pet shops with bad practices im on the horn right away to the humane society, reporting a case of cruelty to animals. last year in a China town resturaunt, i spotted 2 beautiful 7 inch koi in a little tank with no room to move, murky water, no lighting, filter or heater. they now lead a happy life in our local botanical gardens, the s.p.c.a promptly whisked them away!

Take Care of those babies!

Cheers and happy independance day!

I don't think anyone is trying to make anyone else "feel bad". It is a fact that purchasing turtles kept in poor conditions encourages the production and sale of more turtles kept in poor conditions. If the fact that they are kept in poor conditions is the reason that people are motivated to "rescue" the turtle, then the seller will not be motivated to improve the conditions. If we look at the big picture, sacrificing the few could save the many. I also purchased baby turtles from a beach shop under similar circumstances. But now I know better. I wouldn't do it again and I would not encourage others to do it. Education is the key to stopping the "disposable" turtle trend.
