Free roaming iguana story

rayvendawn Jul 02, 2004 10:39 PM

I have a 4 year old iguana named Luna *which is male, didn't find that out til later though*...and we started letting him free roam when he was 2 feet long. Our house is safe and iguana-proofed as much as possible. He has a routein that he does every day, he wakes up on top of the cage we bought him, he climbs down and begs for food, eats then sits in the sun to bask or he scratches on the back door. We have been letting him outside for about 3 weeks now and he stays outside for about 3 hours a day. We have a tall wooden fence and pool with a slope in case he wants to go swimming. We also have 5 foot banana trees for him to climb on near the pool. He has never tried to eascape nor does he have any intrest in climbing the trees or getting near the fence. When he is ready to come inside he scratches on the door again and we let him inside. Then he comes in and scratches on my door, for some reason he loves to sleep in my bed. I have been letting him do this for awhile, I don't know if there are any dangers in what we let him do. He has free roam of the house and outside of the house, he is potty trained also. Which is strange, he will walk into the bathroom and get inside the bathtub to poop, or sit next to the toilet and do it. I have never had any problems with him and he has been a great pet. Before I bought my iguana I had heard the horror stories of male iguanas, how they become during breeding season. I honestly don't notice any difference in Luna and never have besides his apparent chance in color. He has never bit or tail whipped anyone and I'm really proud of him.
Attached is a picture of him with my patternless leopard gecko baby. Note we watched him very carefully with the gecko and he seemed not to care at all about it after a quick lick.

Aw both lizards are adorable

Please remember that just because he hasnt shown interest in escaping, doesnt mean he wont. Iguanas are curious and once my boy found a way out of our screened in backyard, he remembered that spot, and makes a bee-line for it anytime we are outside.

He can get spooked and that could pressure him to escape, for example my Zeph escaped during a thunder storm, and I didnt find him till the next day.

Id just hate to see him escape, if he has a way to escape, sooner or later he will realize that

Forest has never tried until one day the mail-mans truck scared him & I was right with him. He made it across the street, into the neighbor lady's yard before I could get my hands on him. He was FAST! I've never seen him move that fast before or since but now I know he CAN when he wants!

Watch the sneeky little fella! LOL. I learned a leason that day!!!

You are SO lucky to have a well socialized ig. Luna reminds me a lot of our ig, Iggi. She is 3 1/2 years old, but is female. We have had her free roaming for 2 1/2 years. We take her outside every day, for fresh air and sunshine. Because we live near wetlands, we cannot let her outside without supervision. There are still hawks that circle around when we are outside with her. She does not need a leash, and if frightened, she runs to the house. We wish she would sleep in bed with us, but she has her own bed, in her own bedroom, across the hall from us.
