Problems in egg laying?.....

coal Jun 20, 2003 04:07 PM

My snow female laid 7 eggs from 9:00 Thursday morning until now (Friday afternoon.) I can tell she has many more to go... why aren't they coming out? She is very large and well fed and been bred before. The eggs she laid are oblong- can this have anything to do with it? Can they be stuck because 1 is too oblong and lodged the wrong way?
Thanks for any help.

I just got on to post about the same problem with a third year breeder. She has always been a small girl and puts out smaller clutches. This year she laid 13 eggs but still has one up inside of her. Her laying has been rather sparse. She laid most the first day about 9 days ago. Then about 4 days latter she had 2 more. Now she has one left inside towards the base of her tail. She shed again and I thought it would come out after her shed but no luck. I have never had this problem and I have had 5 clutches of corns. Any light would be appreciated. It's gaining on 2 weeks and I think it should be out by now. I have tried handling her a while like you would do when they have a stopped up bowel still nothing.

At least I'm not alone. I tried massaging her a little too to no avail. Good luck with yours, and keep me posted. Maybe someone will help us out.
Take care,

I just went through the same thing with a first time bred Motley Corn. She was a bit light (290g @ breeding) and laid 5 @ 55 days - last Firday. Se had two that were egg bound - approx. 1.5 inches from the vent. No movment of the eggs over the weekend so Monday evening, the vet (luckily there is one in our rural area that does repitles) aspirated the eggs. The posterior one was large (pulled out 10ccs of egg stuff)- too big to pass. Anyway, within 48 hours, she passed the deflated eggs. She has since shed and ate, so mine is on the way to recovery.
It is reported that bound egg viability deminishes after 48 hours meaning even if she passes them, they may not thrive and produce a hatchling. If you are 4-6 days since intial lay, need to take some action. C. Loves book notes that after a week, need to do something - my suggestion is not to wait any longer since you are approaching the 7 days and the snakes health will come into play if you wait a lot longer...

Keep us posted with the progress.....

Thanks for the info. Mine has been only 2 days since the intitial lay, so I should be ok.
However, I predict there are 20-25 eggs left inside to lay. Will they go bad if I dont get them out soon? I don't want that to happen!!! Please let me know, and thanks a lot for the help!

Yeah well I started reading on some other posts that said to take it to a vet or what have you but I thought that was drastic for a $40 snake. Ahh it may be me but im not doing anything to a reptile that costs more than the price of that reptile. I know many would disagree but I really don't care. Anyway, I figured I didn't want the girl to die by being egg bound so I popped the last egg out carefully by myself. I think I did a very good job she even ate last night. I was real gentle in coaxing it out. I pushed and then relaxed so that her cloaca would get dialated enough without hurting her. After she seemed tired but fine. I wouldn't suggest everyone to try this because you could potentially severely hurt your snake and may even cause a kink or something. Anyway all is well here and I hope it doesn't happen again. She is going to have the year off this year.

I know you said many would disagree and you're absolutely right.
So you would rather have your snake die than fork over $50? (Yes, eggbinding can cause death)
I can understand this logic applied to short-lived species like mice...but a snake can live 20 years.
Doing the same with a cat or dog would definitaly get you a charge of animal cruelty/neglect.
If that's how you feel, you should stick to keeping goldfish.
Veterinary attention when neccessary is part of keeping an animal. There are times when you can make judgement calls (pay hundreds for a potentially life-saving treatment, or euthanize, for example) but you can't just let an animal suffer and die because you're too cheap.
