Motley x het motley = ???

cornsnake00 Jul 03, 2004 09:42 AM

Is the motley gene this unpredictable? Or does this happen all the time?

Milk Snake Phase Motley x Milk Snake Phase het Motley breeding - only two good eggs from a small clutch.

One baby is het Motley, the other is Motley with a stripe on it's neck

here is a picture of het Motley (pre shed)

Although the parents of these creamsicle hatchlings were not motley I have no idea about their background other then the fact that they are creamsicles.
The question. Do you think these hatchlings are displaying some motley or just abherant patterning?

For motley the belly pattern or lack of is the dead giveaway.

Traci Jul 04, 2004 04:46 AM

Yes, look for a plain belly. My baby het motley has a mostly plain belly up front, but then it changes to a normal checkered belly pattern as it goes back. My baby motley has an all plain belly. Also, in my pictures notice what the motley trait does to the side pattern of the snake as well.

Very pretty babies Jimmy!

> I just can't tell from the belly of my hatchlings if they may be motley or not.
The belly on the baby looks the same as the parents.
Although the mother looks like she might have slight motley patterning on her neck I never really thought about it much.
here are belly shots of the mom, dad and one of the hatchlings pictured above.

the belly checkers are there even though they are transparent/ translucent (I don't know which word is proper in this case, haha).

With motleys you also see a reduction of the side pattern.

Thanks Traci,
I just couldn't tell.
I have a normal motley and an amel motley and the hatchlings were just too small for me to be certain.
I would look at them and think well that looks about the same and then I would see something else that looked different.
Thanks again

Was going to sell these until they hatched. Now that there out I don't think so. I'am interested in seeing how this motley thing works out.

that has to be one of the coolest patterns I've seen in a really really long time. No offense to the other breeders out there!
