New to Newts

MYoda Jul 03, 2004 02:12 PM

I have aquired a newt and she is kinda slow moving , skinny, and doesn't go in the water. She'll just get near it enough to get wet. Is that a sign of something wrong with her?

I Just bought another today and he is actively swimming around and just seems to be a happy newt.

I am hoping I have a weird one, I have kinda grown attached to stumpy.

Newts not going into water usually implies poor water quality. Since your second newt spends time in the water, it is unlikely that water quality is your problem. So, perhaps it just needs time to acclaimate to its new surroundings. New newts sometimes take weeks to start eating.

I have three firebellies and one is always on the floating cork bark, the other two in the water. I have had them for 3 years, with no problems. Sometimes you get an "odd" newt that likes the land more than water. But a newt not in the water can also indicate poor water quality, so look out in the future for your other newt and see if it decides to stay on the land more. good luck

Well everyone thanks for the replys. But learned the hard way in this case and I witnessed something very interesting at the same time. Came to find out the water went bad very fast. Stumpy's new found buddy went belly up yesterday. But what I had witnessed was very interesting, Stumpy figured that Ren was not feeling to well and wanted him a way from her. So decided to shove him back in the water. Though I didn't think of anything being wrong at the time. But when I came home from work I found Ren at the bottom not moving as well as the single ghost shrimp I have in there. So needless to say thanks for all your help. To bad he didn't last longer I got a bigger tank for them lastnight. I think what also might be a problem is the place I bought them at they were sick cause I bought a replacement friend for Stumpy and he went belly up lastnight and he wasn't introduced into the tank. Thanks again

It's a common problem with newly-acquired FBN. Once their skin gets dry, they are reluctant to go back in the water. This might help:
