Ceratophrys ornata, C. aurita and C. cornuta

Bushmaster Jul 03, 2004 02:21 PM

Hi, I have a 24"l X 16"w X 12"h tank and I am thinking to place a pacman in it. I would like to know if its safe to place a pair with equal size in it or only single specimen. There are some other questions too:
what are the sizes that C.ornata, C.aurita and C.cornuta can get and if are diferences in housing these 3 species.
thanks guys

no, you can keep them together even if the size is the same. i have two in the same tank, with a transparent partition in the middle. it has been close to two weeks, but the both of them are still snapping at each other occasionally. one is slightly bigger than the other, but both will try to snap at each other, sticking their fat tongue onto the transparent sheet. so, it doesn't really matter wat is the size difference. the fact is that they will try to kill each other no matter the size, and the big one wins as it is the one which swallows the smaller one...

Aren't you worried that oe may try to swallow the other?

About the Auritas, I think they are Brasiilian horned frogs, is the biggest of all the Ceratophrys species. I think it can be up to 20 cm. Auritas are from what I know also quite rare in capitive care. Ornatas are probably the most common but Cornutas are also sometimes avalible.

First let me say that aurita is not likely to ever be found in the pet trade. There a few going around, but not many at all. Cornuta has even decreased in number in the pet trade, though they are still found occasionally from importers. Aurita is the largest species. Females can grow to gigantic proportions, up to 8 or 9 inches. The cornuta that I have kept were males and they maxed out at about 4 inches. Ornata surprisingly is not seen much in the trade either. Cranwelli has taken its place. Both ornata and cranwelli can grow to around 6 inches in length.
