SHEDDING QUESTION....

03svtcobra Jul 03, 2004 08:21 PM

how long can a shed cycle last. my female brb has been ready to shed for about 2 weeks now and hasnt.

she had the milky color so thats how i knew she was ready to shed, then all of a sudden her colors went more back to normal. she still has a milky color but not as much.

she is also refusing food which is normal when she is shedding.

is it normal for it to take this long sometimes.. i already increased the humidity in the tank.

any help would be apprecitated.

thanks in advance
steve

I have had my '04 BRB for 3 months now. I notice she takes much longer to complete her cycle than my BCC and BP.

If there is anything such as a possible sickness, rong temps or HUMIDITY, or wounds, the shedding process may take longer. Also, these guys are in tune with the weather and sometimes an oncoming weather pattern disrupts cycles...

I don't know if this is recommended but, if feeding day rolls around more than once after shed cycle begins, I offer food. Every time without fail she eats and sheds over night.

It is like a routine for my little girl.

GOOD LUCK!

it can last a couple weeks with brbs...my female usually stays faded for a week or so followed by normal color and within a few days of that she sheds. BRB's seem to stay in shed a little longer wich is probably why the still eat even when in shed. just from my minute experience

If your BRB still hasn't shed you might want to soak it a a warm water bath for 30 minutes or so. Two weeks is about the longest any of mine have taken. The younger ones I have complete their cycles much quicker than my adults and the only 1 of the 5 I have will refuse a meal even when entirely blue. My younger ones also have higher humidity and a little lower temps than my adult pair, they are kept in smaller enclosures and don't have as much of a temp gradient, so I don't want them to get too hot.

If this is a pattern you need to double check your temps/humidity between the sheds.

Wow, none of adult BRB's eat while in the blue...but it usually takes my adults 5-7 days from "milky" to edysis(not sure I spelled that correctly...sorry).

BTW - How are all those babies doing? Are they up for sale yet?

Take care, Chris

....Some of mine eat when opaque and some do not. Generally the little ones are more inclined to eat when opaque. But, they also shed much more often and so in the wild probably need to eat when in a shed cycle. Most of my adults shed within a week of becoming opaque. When one takes longer and I notice it I will soak it and that usually does the trick. I think humidity and activity have a lot to do with it. Sometimes mine seem ready to shed but just stay in hiding and do not shed. If I clean the cage and make them move around they will shed. I have adult females housed together longterm that seem to get on the same shedding cycle. I even sometimes have dozens of them that seem to be on the same shedding cycle for months at a time. There is more going on with these snakes than we will ever be able to figure out.

I kind of feel bad about it-I wholesaled them off to the same place that purchased them last year. In future times I'll sell them on KS, but for now I better practice my photography. I checked out the place I sell them to as much as possible and they have a good reputation AFAIK. I may try selling one of the 11/03 on KS.
