Not a Tortoise, but found this Cutie while Hiking today (pics)

Lyn Jul 03, 2004 09:33 PM

Found this Painted Turtle while hiking in a local Nature Preserve today. There are Snapping Turtles there too but I have never seen any. I took several pics then let her go on her way. Just thought I'd share with you guys. I'll be posting pics on the Turtle forum but wasn't sure who visited both so hope it's ok I posted some here too!

Another pic

Totally off topic here, I saw 3 Barred Owls in the preserve, one adult and two babies. It was dark so I couldn't get pics, all I got was this one that shows the eye shine of the adult (look close). I never saw wild owls before so it was a real treat.

Sunshine is doing very good. She got outside for quite a while today then had a nice soak. She has her first vet visit this coming Saturday. Just a checkup, she seems very healthy so far. I'm not sure how to get her there. I have a small carrier, but she'd slide around in it. I guess I could put a towel in there. How do you guys transport your tortoises?

Nice Pics! I take my tort to the vets in a small box. He is very small so a shoe box or something that size works great for me. I put a small towel on the bottom so he doesn't slide all over the place. You might want to bring an extra one just incase he goes potty on one of the towels! (speaking from experience here!) I think they have little critter carriers at Walmart and pet stores also if you don't want to carry a box around. Good luck at the vets!

i use a tupperware-type tub (the same one i give him his baths in) to carry mine to the vet or to his grammy's house (my mom loves him). it's tall enough that he can't climb out, and he has enough room to walk around a little (about the size of a large shoebox). i put paper towels in it for traction and absorption, and, by the time we get where we're going, it's usually absorbed quite a bit... he doesn't dig riding in the car.

be sure and bring some poop to your vet for a fecal analysis to make sure she doesn't have parasites!

Nice pictures of the turtle and the owl picture was cool even though you couldn't see anything but the eyes. I love owls and have studied them extensively. Both their eyesight and their hearing is astonishing. Few animals can match them in either catefory. Some species of owl can locate and then pinpoint a mouse on the forest floor in total darkness using just their hearing.

My cousin found a baby barn owl that had been caught and carried home by his cat when we were kids. Luckily, he was able to get it away from the cat and it was still alive. He gave it to me and I raised it until it was old enough to be on it's own. I taught it how to catch mice and everything. I released him in the area where he was found when he was old enough. I saw him a few times after that, then he disappeared and I never saw him again. Hopefully, he was able to survive in the wild.
