Morelia nauta X Morelia spilota cheynei

Wulf Jul 04, 2004 07:20 AM

Hi folks,

I've got a hard to answer question to you guys. My female M. sp. cheynei mated with my male M. nauta and I would have thought that nothing really happens. Two weeks ago the female layed 8 eggs. One egg died, but 7 good looking are left.

Actually I don't like breeding hybrids of that kind, but I'm very curios about how they will look like. My plan is to keep all the eggs in the incubator and then if all still look good let only one animal hatch by destroying the other eggs.

Over here in Europe there is no market for hybrids so I would perhaps have to keep all the animals myself. But my space is limited.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers,
Wulf

I personally would see if any petshops in your area would be willing to take them off of your hands, killing off the eggs imo would be a last ditch effort.

Good luck..

Hopefully things will catch to where the hobby is in the USA. Most all of the top breeders in the US breed hybrids. They also breed pure. But then if you look at what is accpeted as pure may in fact not be.
Its all peer pressure and it takes a little education as well as a willingness to listen and think outside the box. Most that condemn hybrids have a financial interest in doing so!!! Only after people investigate will they discover how narrow minded that they themselves have been.

Hi folks,

thanks for your replies!

Well I do not have financial interests but if the snakes would be sold cheap so that everybody could afford to buy them, some might continue to breed hybrids perhaps even worse than those I've got. In my opinion they are definitly not for further breeding but only for pet snake in a display cage.

I must admit that it was my fault to keep the Morelia nauta together with the Morelia spilota cheynei, but as the climate conditions are almost equal and the cage was big enough I thought it would be ok to do so. I would never have thought that they were fertile and produce eggs.

So, what I have learned out of this is, that - and I perhaps knew that before - Morelia spilota ssp. will mate with everything else and therefore are sort of [bleep]y in python generas :-D In fact it's quite easy to get them to cross-breed or to hybridize with other (sub)-species.

Cheers,
Wulf

Hi,
I really hate saying hate, but I think destroying them would be good actually-(and this is comming froma guy who doesnt feed live cause he feels bad for the mice, I know most people get a kick out of it, but I hate it, my friends always want to see a snake eat a live mouse, but i dotn it. I have 73 snakes right now, and all are on f/t now-(but skip back and forth)-), but i just think hyrnids are not right, natural intergardes are cool, really neat actaully. But I like Europes style,
jeff teel
-)just poked into this forum to see whats going on in the world hyrbids, i didnt want to post here but thought i had good points)

I think it is pretty irresponsible to breed them if your not willing to keep the babies. If its only an F1 clutch I wouldnt be expecting any "lookers".

Hi,

well, that's what I thought, too! I would want to let one hatch, to see how it looks like and to keep it and to see how he will be doing, but I wouldn't want to have 8 of them sticking at my place. So, I guess what I'm goona do is to let only one hatch and to destroy the other eggs.

Cheers,
Wulf
