Problems with an anole?

kimax Jul 04, 2004 11:29 AM

I am currently caring for two green anoles for my school over the summer. One of them seems relatively healthy (he's mostly green, chases crickets etc.) but the other one is almost always brown and tends to burrow under the moss. We can see the hole were he/she goes in. The problem is, this anole won't chase crickets and the other one ends up getting them. I have been misting twice a day so I hope he isnt dehydrated. Is this normal for an anole to burrow? Is it normal that he just isn't hungry? I am really new with these kinda guys and I just kinda got stuck with them because they had no where to go but I am really starting to love these guys. My teacher also said that they were old and wouldnt be surprised if they died. He said they are about 4-5 yrs. old. Is this maybe just all old age?? HELP. (the digging a hole in the moss seems so odd to me!)WHAT DO I DO?

OK... number one, 4-5 years old is not as old as they get, an anole that is well taken care of can live to around like 9-10 years, even longer sometimes. number 2, is the burrowing anole a good bit smaller than the other one? if so, you really shouldn't house them together because the big one will intimidate it and end up scaring it into submition, where it won't eat anything and will hide alot. number 3, i used to have an anole named Geo who liked to burrow alot, and went a good bit without eating sometimes. She was housed with a much larger male anole, and sometimes was intimidated. I removed the male, and she seemed very happy most of the time in her very lush cage after that, even tough i have so much stuff in it that it was often hard to see her. She liked all the plants. ANYWAY, she would often hide under rocks and burrow under stuff... it's normal for alot of them, so don't worry. As long as yours is happy and eats sometimes, it should get anlong fine. And try putting a good bit of foliage in, just make a little fence so the crickets won't climb out. I used to pull the back legs off and put the crickets inside a plastic fense that they couldn't climb on, it allowed me to know she was eating and how much she was.

OH! and one more thing... are they both in a 10 gallon? cause that is really to small for 2 anoles, even though many may diagree with me on that, but i like to stick with ten gallons to an anole.

First of all, thanks for replying so fast! I am glad to hear that anoles will live that long because I would feel horrible if they died in my care. After researching anoles a bit, I know now that they are both females. Oh, and they are the same size approximately. Yesterday I put some applesauce by the hole where she went in. About an hour later I came back and she was sitting on the branch and some of the apple sauce was gone. She seems much happier today. I think I will try to maim a cricket so that she can get it before the other one does. Sorry about my panicking, but its comforting to know that anoles do burry if they are frightened. I don't really know what size the terrarium is.

What are the terrarium dimensions(length, height, width)?
